Success! Rosetta Reaches New Heights

Design & Data has partnered with Blue Dot Solutions on an exciting new project to launch a Rosetta plush toy to the stratosphere and return it safely back to Earth – the Rosetta Strato Mission. The launch was a success and we can now confirm that the plush toy has been found.

For the past few months Blue Dot Solutions have been working on an engineering solution to ensure that the Rosetta plush toy remains in a stable position (i.e. no shaking during launch) with its solar panels fully deployed to recreate a key scene from the Rosetta cartoon series, which was developed for ESA to accompany the Rosetta and Philae mission campaign. The plush toy was attached to a large 1600g balloon filled with 9.1 cubic metres of helium before being released.

The launch took place on 17th March 2016 at 10:40 CET from Gniezno in Poland under clear, blue skies. Footage of the toy was recorded as it neared the stratosphere – the second major layer of the Earth’s atmosphere – at some 30km altitude. We were able to capture a “selfie” of the Rosetta plush toy along with the backdrop of the curvature of the Earth.

In the meantime Design & Data GmbH will be analysing the footage of the mission, which will be revealed in due course in the next few days. Social media enthusiasts can continue to follow updates from the mission at #RosettaStrato.
