LSG Sky Chefs – Space Food Mission

In a new video production for LSG Sky Chefs, we illustrate how it is taking its airline catering and in-flight services to a whole new level. Their Global Culinary Excellence team developed “bonus food” for German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst ahead of his “Horizons” mission.

Typically astronauts spend six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during their mission and their day-to-day meals are a selection from a standard food catalogue. The range of space food manages to address only the basic nutrition requirements and technical challenges associated with food preparation for astronauts working and living in microgravity in near Earth orbit. Much of it is vacuum-packed, and is required to have a shelf life of 1-2 years so that issues of deterioration are not life critical to the astronauts.

Bonus food plays a key role for the physical and psychological wellbeing of astronauts. Astronauts can take a certain amount of bonus food, about 10% of their total provisions, which is specifically tailored to their individual preferences. It is important for morale and spirit during an astronaut’s stay in the challenging environment of space.

During the video we wanted to tie in as much to the different senses and emotions around the topic of space food. We experimented with music and drone shots to figure out a way to transport feelings of home with images. We shot most of the exterior images from the Vosges Mountains in Eastern France, close to its border with Germany, as a stunning natural location that could help captivate audiences with a sense of wonder about our home planet. Close to the surroundings of Alexander Gerst’s hometown of Künzelsau, it reflects a typical central European natural landscape of forests, undulating hills and agricultural lands. This is also near to LSG’s partner company Steritech, where we shot the autoclaving process for LSG.

We had the idea to connect all of the locations with match cuts to link our lives on Earth with life in space. Towards the end of the video you will see some special effect shots of the LSG-can floating in front of ESA astronaut Frank De Winne from the inside of the Columbus mock-up at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, interlaced with shots of the Cupola aboard the ISS.

The resulting video captivates the wonder and curiosity of human space exploration through the connections we have on Earth. We enhance the emotions behind food and help to illustrate the role it plays in astronauts’ daily lives 400 km above the Earth. The video was used at the press conference presenting the astronaut food at the EAC on 19 March 2018 and at various world catering and food industry events and presentations, leading to front cover media mentions in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) among others. We are sure this video has successfully contributed to showcasing LSG Sky Chef’s culinary excellence in space.
