StartupWeekend Space: Bremen

StartUpWeekend Space Bremen

With the slogan “You too can #BeSpacial” the first StartupWeekend Space in Europe takes place on 10-12th April 2015. Hosted at Bremen’s Innovation and Technology Centre (BITZ), the event is designed to generate several lean space startup concepts within 60 hours. The aim is to give people with non-space backgrounds the opportunity to find an entry into the space sector by using their special skills – like once Design & Data Managing Director Sebastian Marcu did. He now operates as the event’s co-lead.

The StartupWeekend Space begins on Friday morning with a keynote speech and workshops. Here, participants are supposed to gain key skills for the development of lean startup concepts. In the evening they will present their ideas in 60 second open mic pitches. Afterwards, the most popular ideas get chosen to be refined by their respective teams.

Until Sunday evening the teams can work on their business concepts. Afterwards, the results will be presented in front of an expert panel. The best business concepts will be honoured and their creators are given the opportunity to gain wide publicity and win support for driving their ideas forward to implementation.

StartupWeekend Space is organised by an international team of young professionals with the goal of demonstrating that the space sector can benefit significantly from the contribution of people with expertise outside of engineering and sciences.

Sebastian Marcu summarises his experience and motivation to create this event:

“Twelve years ago I joined the European Space Agency as a Young Graduate Trainee with neither a science nor an engineering background. Today I am running my own company providing services to the European space industry. It is a career path that I had never imagined for myself. My motivation to co-lead the StartupWeekend Space event builds on my experience and is a means to inspire other non-space graduates to leave their entrepreneurial footprint on this amazing industry.”
