The end of an “unprecedented year”

When we were entering 2020, few of us would have anticipated what the year would become. Shaped, stretched and pushed by the coronavirus pandemic, the whole world has faced unprecedented challenges that have affected us both as individuals and society. For D&D, 2020 was a year of challenges but also a year of successful solutions that we developed to respond to the ‘new normal’.

Our previous experience with web-streaming and virtual events put us in a strong position as everything moved from the physical world online. We continued working with our key clients, including the European Space Agency (ESA), on a range of virtual events including the Industry Space Days (ISD), the Earth Observation conferences Φ-Week 2020, European Polar Science Week, EO for Agriculture under Pressure (EO4Agri) and EO for Water Cycle Science (EO4Water).

We created and launched our OnePoint solution that offers businesses a more robust, secure, and professional livestream events tailored to their individual needs.

But we went beyond providing just technical solutions. We created the look and feel of high-profile events such as the Customer Conference – Let’s Aspire! of the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) and the World Satellite Business Week (WSBW) organised by the Paris-based space sector consultancy Euroconsult.

Our solutions enable participants to securely engage with other attendees, interact with speakers and panellists via Q&A tools, schedule meetings and access content such as papers and e-Posters.

Our focus is always on the user-friendliness of the background technology and therefore we rely on widely available teleconferencing apps such as Skype, Zoom or Webex.

Our efforts in the field of virtual events culminated in WSBW when we ran three days of continuous six-hour streams on two channels in parallel with excellent results.

In addition to our work in the growing sector of online events, we have also been working as a consortium partner on the development of the Point.IOT massive open online course (MOOC). The MOOC helps ambitious entrepreneurs learn about the power of IoT and Galileo satellite technologies to tackle relevant industry challenges.

We continue to help our customers’ content to be seen and heard among wider audiences. We have delivered a range of media to communicate complex idea. Our communication professionals helped to write and illustrate the Ocean State Report 4 summary, develop a video about the report’s key findings and ran an efficient Twitter campaign based on key messages and  tailored graphics. For the launch of the new WEkEO DIAS v1 service that provides a one-point access to data from the European Earth Observation programme Copernicus, we created two video animations to explain the distributed infrastructure and harmonised data access provided by the service. In addition, we used anthropomorphic storytelling to generate awareness of Cheops, the Characterising Exoplanet Satellite, by use of an explainer cartoon animation to communicate the key objectives of the mission.

We use this opportunity to inform our customers that our offices will be closed after Friday 18th December 2020 and will re-open on Monday 11th January 2021. As we enter 2021, we look forward to even more exciting projects. Meanwhile we wish you all a wonderful and relaxing holiday season and great start to the New Year.
